Hello. How are you? (Click Email to let me know).

I’m a writer and filmmaker based in Vancouver, BC. On my filmmaker side I make narrative films and music videos. On my writing side I’ve published short stories, essays, and book reviews. I’ve also written novels, feature screenplays, and film theory that are just sitting on my computer as of now but I’d like to publish them too one day. That would be so cool. I love writing.

I’m currently researching and developing a feature film with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

You can read essays I’m writing as part of my research here.

I graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2018 with a BFA in Film Production and a Minor in Literature. Since then, I’ve been in VIFF’s Catalyst Program and had my work shown in festivals across the country and my writing published in magazines distributed all over North America. I’m now pursuing my MA in Cinema Studies at UBC.

This is really fun for me and I like doing it. I’m going to keep doing it. Thanks for reading. (Click Email to say you’re welcome).

URTEXT

This is a movie about the creation of man from the perspective of his creator.

I wanted to make a movie about how they had no idea what they were doing or talking about.

IT CAME TO PASS IN THE TOWN OF OSHPITZIN

This is a movie about two rabbis in the 18th century who come across a ghost town in murky back country roads. They’ve never been here before and they’ll never be here again.

I wanted to make a movie that scared me the way being Jewish scares me sometimes. It’s a kind of ineffable fear.

FEAST

This is a movie that takes place after the apocalypse about a man who has someone important taken from him.

I wanted to make a movie that made people feel a little bit sick. And I wanted to make a movie in the desert.

GENESIS

This was my thesis film for my BFA program. In it, a young man thinks his father is God. This is a movie about him and his mom.

This was the result of everything I learned in film school and I had a lot of fun making it with my friends.

INK
by Angela Woodward
  - BOOK REVIEW

This is a review of a really inspiring short novel I read. I think this book is special in the grand canon of books about writers having a hard time writing: it both does and doesn’t make that feel like a personal apocalypse. To the writer it’s a disaster, to everyone else -- who cares? That dialectic and more are held together tenderly and thoughtfully as a singlular object. This novel is a cubist block of of disparate whirling pieces and each made me feel very excited to write.

A DEATH: NOTES OF A SUICIDE
by Zalman Shneour
- BOOK REVIEW

This is an essay about a 100 year old Yiddish novel that was first translated to English a couple of years ago. It’s about a Jew and his love affair with his own revolver as he paces an unnamed town willing all the divine forces he can conjure to give him the strength to kill himself.

George Salis of The Collidescope gave me the opportunity to review an “invisible book” and I think that’s what this book felt like. At times, I looked at it and it felt so unstably obscure that it was at risk of collapsing into molecules. I loved it.

VANCOUVER’S LAST FILM
- SHORT STORY

A short story I wrote for SAD Magazine’s “Death” issue. I thought it would be interesting to write about non-organic death (how people refer to a city as “dying” or an art form as “dying.”) I also thought it would be interesting to write a kind of Borgesian textbook excerpt of a fake movie, one directed by a man driven so insane by the mundanity of a life in Hallmark Christmas movies that he sets out to make a cinematic Hieronymous Bosch painting. I got really excited by that idea and would love to write a novel about it one day.

The accompanying art for this short story was made by John Pachkowsky and it’s now framed and in my living room. It makes me feel very proud of myself.

WORMHOLE
- SHORT STORY

This is written epistolary style. I think there was a time where I felt embarrased about just writing a scene with characters in it. I don’t feel that way any more but there is definitely a liberation to constrained forms that I still appreciate.

This is a classic heartbreaking/longing piece. There’s a lot of sentences in it that I still think are quite pretty.

Research Essays

In researching my first feature film one thing’s become clear: research is a particularly lonely activity.

I have all these books by mostly dead people to keep me company and they fill me with so many ideas and sensations and I’ve become a bit bored with marginalia.

So I started this research journal filled with contemplations on my contemplations, dialogues with thinkers that speak to me and art that’s moved me.

It’s also an invitation in a way to come look and join in the creative process. No good idea is entirely unique to one person and good ideas are all we can hope for.
