Watch the Video
Haley Blais performed this song for the first time at her first show since COVID began. The entire crowd sang the outro with her even though no one had ever heard the song before. I think that’s when you know you’ve made what is colloquially known as a “hit record.” This song plunged into everyone’s cerebellum immediately. The version that came out of the studio was anthemic. Haley strung the song with ripping trumpets and off-kilter drum rhythms and her signature operatic theatricality. I find it such an intensly sad song that is so fun to listen to.
Haley always writes songs about herself but this was the most explicit she’d ever been. I wanted to make it clear she wasn’t playing a character or an abstraction in the music video so as extant elements of music video imagery fly past her so do references to her previous work, band mates in her other projects, and (by virtue of them being willing to do a favour for us) all of our friends.
